Company naming: 9 mistakes you'll pay for years

The company name is a decision you pay for 5-20 years. Changing it later costs €5,000-50,000 (logo, site, materials, communication, SEO recovery). Here are the 9 most expensive mistakes I regularly see in SMEs.

1. Not checking trademark

"Nice name, register it!" Without check on euipo.europa.eu and national IP offices. Result: cease and desist from whoever registered 3 years before. Recovery cost: total rebranding €15,000+ + legal fees.

2. .com (or local TLD) domain not available

"I'll take .net, .biz, .info". Mistake. .com and country TLDs are the 2 domains people type by default. Without .com you lose 30% of organic traffic from direct typo.

3. Difficult pronunciation

Test: your next employee will answer phone "Hello, [name]". If you spell every time, you have a problem. Cases: "Xunxquia", "Vrlpkx" (parody), "creative" names with aggressive consonants.

4. Multilingual traps

The famous Mitsubishi Pajero case (in Spanish "pajero" is offensive). For SMEs targeting export: Google Translate check of name in English, French, German, Spanish. Even just to avoid laughs.

5. Geographic limitation in name

"London Web Studio" → when you expand to Manchester or Birmingham, name becomes a lie. Solution: neutral names (e.g., "Gamerbit") or scalable suffixes.

6. Sector limitation in name

"Tony's Pizzeria" → when you want to add regional cuisine, you're blocked. "Tony's Studio" is scalable.

7. Trendy slang/buzzwords

Names with "AI", "Tech", "Digital", "Hub", "Lab" look modern in 2026. They'll look dated in 2030. Lasting companies avoid trends (e.g., Apple, Patagonia, Stripe — names without time references).

8. Not testing with real customers

Before registering: ask 10 potential customers "what do you think when you hear this name?". If 7/10 have neutral/positive reaction, go. If 4+ have doubts, restart.

9. Leaving choice to unfiltered AI

"ChatGPT, give me 50 names for my consulting firm". Output: generic names like "ConsultPro", "ExpertHub", "SolutionsX". They work as inspiration, never as final choice. Every AI-generated name needs manual verification against the 8 points above.
