8 contact form mistakes that cost you leads
The contact form is where conversions are won or lost. Here are the 8 mistakes we see weekly on SME sites.
The contact form is the final conversion point of your site. All the SEO, ads and copy work exists to push users toward that form. Yet SME contact forms are riddled with mistakes that cost 30-50% of submissions.
Here are the 8 most common problems we see in weekly audits, in order of impact.
1. Too many fields (8+)
Each extra field costs 4-7% of submissions. Forms with 10+ fields convert 60% less than forms with 3 essential fields.
Fix: reduce to name, email, message. Phone optional. Everything else can be asked when you reply.
2. Required fields that aren't actually needed
VAT number required on a brochure-site contact form? Company name required from a freelancer asking for a quote? No.
Fix: require only fields without which you can't reply.
3. Aggressive captcha
reCAPTCHA v2 with the 9-tile puzzle ("select all the traffic lights") costs 12-18% of serious users. On mobile it's torture.
Fix: use reCAPTCHA v3 (invisible) or Cloudflare Turnstile. For basic spam, a hidden honeypot field is enough.
4. No clear privacy consent
Without a privacy checkbox + link to privacy policy, the form isn't GDPR-compliant. And 30% of more aware users bail.
Fix: required checkbox with text "I have read and accept the privacy policy".
5. No post-submit confirmation
User clicks "Submit" and nothing happens — or a small hidden message appears. Result: doubt about whether it actually sent. Often resubmits.
Fix: redirect to a dedicated thank-you page or a big, clear message with "Reply within X hours".
6. Inline errors that destroy the form
You fill in 8 fields, hit submit, get "email error" — and the rest gets wiped. Rage.
Fix: inline validation while user types. And never wipe data already entered.
7. Form not optimised for mobile
Tiny fields, long dropdowns, wrong keyboard. On mobile, form conversion drops 40-60% if not optimised.
Fix: use type="email", type="tel", correct inputmode, labels above (not beside), big visible button.
8. No submission tracking
If you don't know how many forms get submitted, you can't tell if optimisations work. Surprisingly common.
Fix: GA4 event on form submit. If possible, separate event for "form error" too (to see where users get stuck).
Quick checklist
- Max 3 required fields
- Inline validation, never wipe data
- Invisible captcha or honeypot
- Required privacy checkbox
- Clear post-submit confirmation + reply time
- Mobile: big fields, labels above, right keyboard
- GA4 tracking on submit + error events
