Google Ads Search: how to structure effective campaigns in 2026
Google Ads Search campaign structure decides 50% of performance. A wrong structure means budget burned in 30 days; a right one scales predictably. Here's how to structure in 2026, after Google's algorithm changes.
The 3 campaign families
- Brand: protect company name (very low CPC, high CTR). Always on.
- Prospect: generic commercial keywords (medium-high CPC, where results happen)
- Competitor: competitor names (controversial, high CPC, variable conversion)
Rule: ALWAYS separate Brand from Prospect. Mixing them skews quality score and CPL.
Clear naming convention
Example for a Milan accountant:
[Brand] - Smith Firm - Search
[Prospect] - Accountant LDN - Search - Generic
[Prospect] - Accountant LDN - Search - SME
[Prospect] - Open VAT LDN - Search - Lead-gen
Naming serves you and whoever takes over. Our rule: type + topic + city + match type/intent.
SKAG is dead, STAG is present
Single Keyword Ad Group (SKAG) was 2018-2021 best practice. Today Google penalises fragmentation: too many ad groups with few conversions → algorithm doesn't learn.
STAG (Single Theme Ad Group): 1 ad group per theme with 5-15 related keywords (broad + phrase). Example for "Open VAT":
- open vat milan
- accountant open vat
- how much to open vat
- flat-rate open vat
Match types in 2026
Broad match modified no longer exists. Options:
- Broad: wide, let Google AI decide. For branding or awareness.
- Phrase: balanced, default option for most SMEs
- Exact: only for super-commercial high-value keywords
Recommended mix: 60% phrase, 30% exact, 10% broad.
Negative keywords critical
A list of 50-200 negative keywords per account, updated monthly, cuts 20-40% of waste. Base list: "free", "jobs", "salary", "wikipedia", non-target city names. See the Lead Gen Machine package for full Google Ads management.
