How to plan 1 blog article a week (without burnout)
5-step system to publish one SEO article per week for your SME without hiring a copywriter. Time required: 90 minutes.
Publishing 1 article per week is the ideal frequency for an SME wanting to grow via SEO. Below this frequency, Google doesn't recognise you as authority. Above, it consumes you.
Here is the 5-step system that lets you do it in 90 total minutes per week, without hiring a copywriter.
Pre-step: initial setup (one-time — 4 hours)
Build a "topic backlog" of 24 articles
Brainstorm all possible topics relevant to your target. Categories to cover:
- FAQ from real clients (10 articles)
- Specific problems you solve (8 articles)
- Comparisons ("X vs Y") (4 articles)
- Anonymous case studies (2 articles)
24 articles = 6 months of publishing. More than enough to start.
For each topic, define:
- Main keyword (search volume on Keyword Tool)
- Intent (informational / commercial / transactional)
- Gamerbit package it links to
- Difficulty (1=easy, 5=hard)
Start from difficulty 1-2 topics. Hard ones after 6 months.
Step 1 — Targeted keyword research (15 min)
For this week's article:
- Search Google for the main keyword
- Look at top 5 results: what do they cover?
- Check "People also ask" — copy 3-5 related questions
- Scroll to bottom for "Related searches"
- Final list: main keyword + 3-5 additional questions
Step 2 — 5-minute brief (5 min)
Brief = summary of what to write. Template:
WORKING TITLE: [catchy headline, 50-60 chars]
MAIN KEYWORD: [keyword]
INTENT: [informational / commercial]
ANGLE: [the distinctive point of view of your article]
H2 STRUCTURE:
1. [problem/context]
2. [solution 1]
3. [solution 2]
4. [real examples]
5. [mistakes to avoid]
6. [final CTA]
TARGET LENGTH: [800-1200 words]
INTERNAL LINKS: [2-3 relevant articles/packages]
Step 3 — AI-assisted draft (30 min)
Use the brief as a prompt for Claude/ChatGPT:
Write a blog article for an SME website on [TITLE].
Site context: [briefly describe your business]
Tone: [practical, no buzzwords, concrete examples]
Target customer: [who they are]
H2 structure:
[paste the brief]
Length: [target] words.
Always include concrete numbers, real examples, and a final CTA.
No empty phrases like "in today's digital world".
AI gives you a draft in 30-60 seconds. Not perfect, but 70% of the work.
Step 4 — Review and personalisation (30 min)
What to change in the AI draft:
- Add 2-3 real examples from your sector
- Replace invented numbers with verified data
- Add internal links to packages/articles
- Personalise the final CTA
- Cut generic or redundant sentences
- Make sure every H2 has a payoff (not just a title)
Result: an article that looks written by you, because it is.
Step 5 — SEO-ready publishing (10 min)
Before hitting publish:
- Title (H1): contains main keyword, max 60 chars
- Meta description: 150-160 chars, includes keyword + benefit
- URL slug: 4-6 words, contains main keyword
- Featured image: 1200×675 image with descriptive alt text
- Article schema markup: automatic if you use a good SEO plugin
- Category: always assigned (1, max 2)
- Internal links: 2-3 to other relevant articles/pages
- External links: 1-2 to authoritative sources (with
rel="noopener")
Distribution (extra 15 min — optional)
- LinkedIn post with 3 key takeaways + link
- Email newsletter to subscribers
- Submit new URL to Search Console
Total time: 90 weekly minutes
- Keyword research: 15 min
- Brief: 5 min
- AI draft: 30 min
- Review and personalisation: 30 min
- Publishing: 10 min
Total: 90 min. For organised people, can drop to 60 min from week 8.
Expected results
- Month 3: first organic clicks, traffic +20-30%
- Month 6: 4-8 keywords in top 10, traffic +80-150%
- Month 12: authoritative blog in your sector, steady organic traffic
Common mistakes
- Publish and forget: update old articles every 12-18 months
- Only "evergreen" articles: mix evergreen + topical (industry news)
- No images: every article deserves 1-3 images/screenshots
- No final CTA: every article must link to a package or to the audit
- Skip the review: AI writes draft, you write article
