How to reduce your site bounce rate (5 most common causes)

High bounce rate = visitors who arrive and leave instantly. Often the problem isn't the content. Here are the 5 real causes.

How to reduce your site bounce rate (5 most common causes)

High bounce rate means visitors arrive on the site and leave without interacting. For an SME, a 70-80% bounce rate isn't unusual — and it costs you 60% of potential enquiries.

The cause is almost never "the content is bad". It's 5 specific factors, in order of frequency.

1. Site too slow (cause #1, underrated)

If the site takes more than 3 seconds to load, 40% of visitors leave before seeing anything. They don't have a "real" bounce — they didn't even see the homepage.

Typical symptoms: high bounce especially on mobile, average time on page < 10 seconds, high homepage exit rate.

Fix: optimise Core Web Vitals. See site speed guide.

2. Mobile not optimised

65% of traffic is mobile. If the site is "responsive but uncomfortable" (small text, close-together buttons, sideways scroll), users leave in 5 seconds.

Typical symptoms: mobile bounce > 75% while desktop is 50%.

Fix: test on real mobile (not just Chrome DevTools). Big buttons, 16px+ fonts, no intrusive popups, simple navigation.

3. Hero that doesn't answer "why am I here?"

The user arrives from Google with specific intent. If they don't see an answer to that intent in the first 5 seconds, they leave.

Example: user searches "kitchen renovation London", clicks Google Ad, lands on a homepage saying "Welcome to Smith Studio - serving clients since 1985". Instant bounce.

Fix: hero with a specific headline that names the problem, not the company. "Kitchen renovation in London - free quote in 48h". See also landing pages that convert.

4. Intent mismatch (wrong traffic source)

If you get traffic from wrong queries/keywords, users aren't your target. High bounce, zero conversions.

Typical symptoms: traffic spikes on a specific page with > 90% bounce, non-commercial keywords in Search Console.

Fix: analyse Search Console — which keywords drive traffic but no clicks? You're probably intercepting informational queries when you want commercial. Adjust meta description and h1.

5. Intrusive popup before content

"Subscribe to newsletter" popup covering the screen within 3 seconds → 25-40% of visitors leave. Especially on mobile.

Fix: popups only after 30+ seconds or on exit-intent. Never immediate. Never full-screen on mobile (Google penalises).

Bonus — the "soft bounce" problem

In GA4, "bounce" means sessions < 10 seconds. So a high bounce rate in GA4 is a strong signal that users really leave quickly.

Compare GA4 numbers with old Universal Analytics: GA4 bounce is typically 30-50% lower. If it's still high, you have a real problem.

How to prioritise the diagnosis

  1. Open your site on mobile from a normal 4G connection (not WiFi). What do you see in the first 5 seconds?
  2. PageSpeed Insights test → if below 50, start here
  3. Search Console → which queries bring traffic? Match content?
  4. Heatmap (Hotjar/Clarity) → where do users actually click?
  5. Microsoft Clarity has free "session replay" — watch 10 real sessions

What NOT to do

  • Don't add autoplay video or audio (causes abandonment)
  • Don't block content behind registration popups
  • Don't open external links in the same tab
  • Don't gate everything behind a cookie consent popup

Realistic expectations

"Good" bounce rate by sector (GA4 averages):

  • E-commerce: 35-50%
  • B2B / lead gen: 45-65%
  • Local services: 40-55%
  • Blog / content: 60-75% (high is normal)
