Schema markup for SMEs: a practical guide with examples

Schema markup in plain English: what it is, why Google rewards you, which types matter for an SME.

Schema markup for SMEs: a practical guide with examples

Schema markup is the language Google understands to know who you are, what you offer, where you are, what you charge. Without schema markup, Google guesses from your text. With schema markup, you explicitly tell it "this is my business, these are my hours, these are my reviews".

Result: rich snippets (stars, prices, FAQs in SERP), better CTR, more stable rankings.

What schema markup is, in practice

It's JSON-LD (structured text) you put in a <script> tag on your site. Minimal example for a local SME:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LocalBusiness",
  "name": "Your Business",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "12 High St",
    "addressLocality": "London",
    "postalCode": "SW1A 1AA"
  },
  "telephone": "+44 20 1234 5678"
}

You put it in the <head> of the homepage. Google reads, understands, rewards.

The 5 most important schema types for an SME

1. LocalBusiness (physical-location business)

For restaurants, salons, professional firms, shops, any business with a physical location. Includes address, hours, phone, price range.

2. Service (for each service offered)

For every service page. Includes service name, price (or range), area served. Shows price directly in SERP.

3. FAQPage (frequently asked questions)

For pages with FAQs. Questions can appear as "rich snippets" under your Google result. Expands SERP real estate 30-100%.

4. Article / BlogPosting (blog articles)

For each article. Includes author, publication date, modified date, image. Required for Google Discover and Top stories.

5. BreadcrumbList (breadcrumbs)

Shows the "Home > Packages > Conversion Website" path directly in SERP. Lifts CTR 6-12%.

Practical example — "Business Website" service page

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Service",
  "name": "Business Website Build",
  "description": "Professional website for SMEs, from £2,000",
  "provider": {
    "@type": "Organization",
    "name": "Gamerbit"
  },
  "areaServed": "IT",
  "offers": {
    "@type": "Offer",
    "price": "2000",
    "priceCurrency": "EUR"
  }
}

FAQ schema example

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [{
    "@type": "Question",
    "name": "How much does the website cost?",
    "acceptedAnswer": {
      "@type": "Answer",
      "text": "From €2,000 for the Business package..."
    }
  }]
}

How to test schema markup

  1. Rich Results Test by Google. Paste URL, it tells you what's valid and what isn't.
  2. Schema.org Validator for JSON-LD syntax.
  3. Search Console > Enhancements shows recognised schema on your site over time.

5 common mistakes to avoid

  1. Schema on the wrong pages — don't put FAQPage on pages without visible FAQs in HTML.
  2. Made-up data — Google penalises schema that doesn't match visible content.
  3. Multiple LocalBusiness on the same URL — one per page only.
  4. Fake or copied reviews — only verified Google reviews or certified platforms (Trustpilot, etc.).
  5. Schema without testing — always run through Rich Results Test before calling it "done".

How quickly you see results

Schema markup has immediate SERP effect (days-weeks), but ranking impact is indirect: Google understands you better and shows you for more relevant queries. Click lift is typically 10-30% on top results that show rich snippets.
