SEO content audit: how to clean and boost old content
Old articles on your blog can hurt SEO: cannibalise keywords, lower overall authority, occupy crawl budget. A well-done content audit can recover 30-50% of lost traffic without writing new. Here's the process.
The 4 possible article destinies
- Keep as-is: already performing, don't touch
- Update: relevant but dated, refresh content
- Consolidate: similar to another, merge into better one
- Delete + 301 redirect: irrelevant, unrecoverable
Step 1: data collection
For each article, collect:
- Organic traffic last 12 months (GA4)
- Keyword ranking (GSC, Ahrefs, Semrush)
- Backlinks (Ahrefs free)
- Average time on page
- Conversion rate
Step 2: classification
| Metric | Keep | Update | Consolidate | Delete |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic/month | >100 | 20-100 | <20 but similar | <5 |
| Backlinks | 5+ | 1-5 | 0 | 0 |
| Age | <12m | 12-36m | any | >36m |
Step 3: concrete update
- Update "last modified" date (ranking boost)
- Add 200-500 words of fresh content
- Update examples/numbers/screenshots to 2026
- Improve H2/H3 structure
- Add new internal links
- Resubmit to GSC for fast re-indexing
Step 4: consolidate
2-3 similar articles (e.g. "how to write blog post", "blog article structure", "blog post tips") → 1 complete pillar page. 301 redirect from old URLs to new. Result: 1 strong article instead of 3 weak ones cannibalising each other.
Step 5: delete + redirect
Zombie articles (zero traffic, zero backlinks, dated content) → remove and 301 redirect to most relevant site page. Do NOT 404 (loses authority).
Complete audit takes 8-20 hours for 100-article blog. ROI: typically +30-60% traffic in 90 days. Included in Grow package.
