Essential brand book for SMEs: what to actually include
Multinational brand books are 80-page books. For SMEs they're unusable: nobody reads them, they cost thousands, they age in 18 months. A well-made SME brand book is 8-12 pages, alive, used by anyone writing or designing for you. Here's what to include.
The 7 essential sections
- Manifesto (1 page): mission, values, target, positioning. What you're NOT.
- Logo: versions (horizontal, vertical, monogram), min spaces, allowed backgrounds, mistakes to avoid
- Colour palette: primary + secondary, HEX/RGB/CMYK codes, accessibility (contrast)
- Typography: primary + secondary font + fallback, standard sizes (H1, H2, body, caption)
- Brand voice: 1 page (see dedicated article)
- Iconography: icon style, approved and avoid examples
- Application examples: business card, email signature, social post, slide deck
Format: PDF vs Notion vs Figma
- Notion: winner for small SMEs — collaborative, searchable, always updated
- Figma: great if you have internal designer or agency working in Figma
- Static PDF: only for formal external communication (RFPs, tenders)
Updates: 2× a year
Brand book isn't an eternal document. Half-yearly review: what changed, examples to add, recurring team errors to prevent. 30 minutes every 6 months.
Realistic cost: SME brand book by freelance designer €800-2,000. By agency: €2,500-5,000. Full inclusion in Foundation package.
