Color psychology: choosing a commercial palette that converts
Brand colour choice isn't aesthetic: it impacts trust (+18%), conversions (+24% with contrasting CTAs), time on site. Yet most SMEs choose colours "because the owner likes them". Here's the approach using psychology + accessibility for decisions that move the P&L.
Associations that work (and don't)
- Blue: trust, professionalism, finance, B2B. Overused (PayPal, Facebook, IBM): anonymity risk
- Green: health, sustainability, personal finance, freshness
- Red: urgency, passion, food, sport. Excess = aggression
- Purple: luxury, creativity, premium B2C. Underused in B2B
- Orange: energy, accessibility, e-commerce. High CTA conversions
- Black: luxury, exclusivity, sophistication
- Yellow: optimism, attention. Dangerous in excess (looks cheap)
The WCAG contrast rule
Regardless of colours, you need AAA contrast on critical elements:
- CTA always contrasting with background (ratio > 4.5:1)
- Dark body text on light background (never light grey on white)
- Free tester: contrast-ratio.com
Without contrast, the world's prettiest colour loses conversions.
Practical 3-step approach
- Pick 1 primary colour aligned with sector (e.g. blue if B2B, green if sustainability)
- Add 1 opposite CTA colour on the colour wheel for max contrast
- Define 3 neutrals: black/dark grey for text, white/ivory for backgrounds, light grey for separators
Gamerbit example: blue #4862ff (trust + tech) + red #ff333d (urgency CTA) + purple #a960ee (creativity). 2025 studies show +24% CTA click with well-built palette.
