Image optimization: WebP, AVIF and lazy load in 2026
Images are 60-70% of average web page weight. Properly optimised, reduce weight 60-80% without visible degradation, improving speed and SEO. Here's the complete 2026 pipeline.
The 3 modern formats
- WebP: supported by 96% of browsers. Reduces JPEG by 25-35%. Default safe.
- AVIF: supported by 92% of browsers (2026). Reduces JPEG by 50%, but slow encoding.
- JPEG/PNG: fallback for legacy browsers.
Strategy: serve AVIF if supported, WebP otherwise, JPEG as fallback.
Native lazy loading
HTML attribute loading="lazy" on <img> tags: browser loads image only when approaching viewport. 1-line implementation, 30-50% reduction in initial load.
Example:
<img src="photo.jpg" loading="lazy" alt="..." />
Responsive images with srcset
Serve right size per device:
<img
src="photo-800w.jpg"
srcset="photo-400w.jpg 400w, photo-800w.jpg 800w, photo-1200w.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 640px) 400px, (max-width: 1024px) 800px, 1200px"
loading="lazy" alt="..." />Mobile gets 400w (50KB), desktop 1200w (200KB). Without srcset all get 1200w.
