Phone number on homepage: where to place it to maximise calls

SMEs lose 30% of calls due to wrong phone placement. 6 spots where to put it (and 3 mistakes to avoid).

Phone number on homepage: where to place it to maximise calls

For many SMEs the phone is still the main sales channel: 60-70% of clients call before buying. Yet the number is often hidden at the bottom of the contact page.

Result: the site brings visits, visits look for the number, don't find it easily, go to the competitor. Here's how to fix it.

The 6 spots where the phone MUST appear

1. Site header (above the fold, always visible)

Position: top right, next to the menu or just below. Clickable button (tel:).

Example: "๐Ÿ“ž 020 1234 5678 โ€” Mon-Fri 9-6"

Average call lift: +25-40% vs number only in contact page.

2. Homepage hero (primary or secondary CTA)

Below the main headline, as a second button: "Request a quote" + "๐Ÿ“ž Call 020 1234 5678".

For urgent local services, phone should be the primary CTA, not the form.

3. Mobile sticky bar (bottom)

On mobile: fixed bar at bottom with two buttons โ€” "Call now" + "WhatsApp".

Mobile call lift: +50-80%.

4. Services/packages page (near the price)

Just below the price or "Request a quote", add "Prefer to talk? ๐Ÿ“ž 020 1234 5678".

5. Footer

Clickable phone always present in the footer of every page. Together with email and address.

6. Contact page (obviously)

Number prominent, hours, "we typically reply within X minutes", WhatsApp link.

3 common mistakes to avoid

1. Number as image instead of text

Numbers saved as images (to avoid spam) block click-to-call on mobile. Huge mistake. Use tel: with real text.

2. Not in clickable format

On mobile, the number must be clickable to call with one tap. Correct syntax:

๐Ÿ“ž 020 1234 5678

3. No visible hours

Number without hours โ†’ users call outside hours, frustrated, don't call back. Always show "Mon-Fri 9-6" or equivalent.

How to improve call conversion

State the response time

"Reply within 3 rings" or "We typically answer in 2 minutes" lowers the "they won't pick up" anxiety.

Offer alternatives

For those who can't call, always offer WhatsApp or callback form ("we'll call you back within 1 hour").

Local number always, even if you're online-only

Toll-free numbers (800, 199) are perceived as "big corporate, expensive, automated". Local geographic number conveys closeness.

Call tracking (essential to optimise)

1. GA4 event on phone click

Track every click on tel: as "phone_click" event in GA4. See tracking guide.

2. Call tracking software (for those spending on Ads)

Tools like CallRail, CallTrackingMetrics assign different numbers to each traffic channel. See how many calls come from Google Ads, SEO, Facebook, etc. Cost: โ‚ฌ30-100/month.

3. "How did you find us?" survey

For those without call tracking budget, first question on the phone: "How did you find us?". Low accuracy but better than nothing.

Before/after example (Gamerbit client)

Bolzano accounting firm:

 • Before: number only in /contact.php, 18 calls/month
 • After: number in header + sticky mobile + footer, 47 calls/month (+161%)

Implementation time: 2 hours. ROI: huge.
