Storytelling for SMEs: how to make customers feel — without sounding corporate

Storytelling is the most over-promised, under-delivered topic in marketing. Most "storytelling guides" tell you to "evoke emotions" and "tell your why" — useless advice that produces another corporate-sounding website. Real storytelling for SMEs is concrete, structural, and learnable. Here's how to apply it.

What storytelling actually means for an SME website

Forget the "hero's journey" frameworks designed for novelists. For an SME website, storytelling means three things:

  1. Specificity over abstraction — "we helped 12 contractors close more bids" instead of "we drive growth"
  2. Tension before solution — name the problem before pitching yourself
  3. Real characters — actual people, not "our valued partners"

That's it. The rest is craft.

The 3 story frameworks that work for SME copy

1. The Before / After / Bridge (BAB)

The most reliable framework for landing pages, hero sections, and case studies.

  • Before: describe the prospect's current pain in their language
  • After: describe the world they want — concrete, sensory, time-bound
  • Bridge: what you do, and why it gets them from Before to After

Example:

2. The Problem-Agitation-Solution (PAS)

Best for emotional, urgent topics: lead-gen, conversion fixes, churn.

  • Problem: name the issue clearly
  • Agitation: show the cost of leaving it unsolved (financial, time, opportunity)
  • Solution: the fix, with a specific next step

Use sparingly — overdone PAS feels manipulative. Best for one section per page, not the whole site.

3. The "I see you" framework

The most modern, hard-to-fake framework. Show the prospect you understand their world by naming details only an insider would know.

Example for an accounting firm targeting tradespeople:

"You're juggling 12 active jobs, 4 invoices waiting on payment, and a tax deadline in 9 days. Your accountant calls you twice a year and emails 'send me the receipts'. You spend a Saturday in the office trying to find that one supplier invoice from August."

That last sentence — the Saturday detail — is what makes it real. Generic copy never gets that specific.

The corporate phrases to delete forever

If your site contains any of these, you have an AI-tell or template-tell:

  • "In today's competitive market..."
  • "Our team of experts..."
  • "Cutting-edge solutions..."
  • "We pride ourselves on..."
  • "Innovative approach..."
  • "Tailored solutions..."
  • "Dedicated to providing..."
  • "Proven track record..."
  • "State-of-the-art..."
  • "Best-in-class..."

Every one of these phrases reads as "I have nothing specific to say". Replace with: a number, a name, a specific situation, a real moment.

How to find your story (when you don't know it)

Most SME owners say "I don't have a story". They do — they just don't see it. Try this exercise:

  1. Take 5 of your best clients
  2. For each, write: what they were doing before they hired you, what specifically frustrated them, what you changed in 30 days
  3. Look for the pattern across the 5
  4. That pattern IS your story

The pattern is almost never "we deliver excellence". It's something like "we fix tracking before they even ask, because half the agencies didn't bother". That specific behaviour is your story.

Apply storytelling page-by-page

Service pageBAB or PASSpecific problem the service solves

If a competitor could swap their logo onto your homepage and not change a word, your storytelling has failed.

The 30-second test

Before publishing any page, do this:

  1. Read it out loud
  2. Cover the logo with your hand
  3. Could this page belong to 5+ other companies in your sector?

If yes, rewrite. The story is the part that's only yours.
