Core Web Vitals 2026: what changes for SMEs
Since March 2024 INP (Interaction to Next Paint) has replaced FID as Google's official metric. In 2026 thresholds are stricter and ranking impact is confirmed. Here's what to check on your site now.
The 3 official 2026 metrics
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): target <2.5s, ideal <1.8s
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): target <200ms, ideal <100ms (replaces FID)
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): target <0.1
INP: what it is, why it matters
INP measures total "lag" between user interaction (click, tap, key press) and site visual response. While FID measured only first interaction, INP is the 75th percentile of ALL interactions. More representative of real experience.
Main cause of high INP: heavy JavaScript blocking main thread.
Concrete INP improvement fixes
- Code splitting: load JS only where needed
- Defer non-critical JS (
deferattribute) - Web Workers for heavy operations (parsing, calculations)
- Bundle size reduction: tree shaking, dead code elimination
- Avoid excessive third-party scripts (Hotjar, FB Pixel, etc.) — limit to 3-5 essentials
Measurement tools
- PageSpeed Insights: measures real (Field Data) and simulated (Lab) Core Web Vitals
- Chrome DevTools Performance: deep dive on individual interactions
- Google Search Console: Core Web Vitals report (real user data)
- web.dev/measure: centralised dashboard
Confirmed SEO impact
2025 Backlinko study: sites with all CWV "good" ranked on average 2.3 positions higher than sites with at least 1 "poor" metric. Cumulative effect with other SEO factors.
